The last month or so has been a busy one for staff at Warkworth Institution after the seizures of more than $404,000 worth of drugs, contraband and unauthorized items at the medium-security federal facility.
A Correctional Service Canada (CSC) spokesperson has confirmed to MBC that the latest two seizures were again the result of suspected drone drops, and both of these large hauls took place in the span of a single day.
In terms of the latest, Correctional Service Canada said multiple packages including tobacco, marijuana, and methamphetamine, in addition to a cellphone and related accessory, were seized on June 25.
βThe total estimated institutional value of these seizures is $144,130,β reported the CSC.
Meanwhile, about two weeks prior on June 13, there was another seizure of tobacco, marijuana and shatter (cannabis concentrate.) In this instance, the total estimated institutional value of the items seized was reported at $207,915.
And prior to this, on May 27, the CSC reported tobacco and marijuana worth an estimated $52,860 was confiscated.
In all of these incidents spanning roughly five weeks, the CSC credited the seizures to the vigilance of staff.
Officials have noted that heightened measures to prevent contraband from entering institutions remain in place, and work is continuing with police to take action against those who attempt to bring contraband into correctional institutions.
A telephone tip line remains in place for all federal institutions where information relating to security and safety can be shared.
The toll-free number β 1-866-780-3784 β helps ensure that information shared is protected, and callers remain anonymous.
