CUPE 1453, the union representing more than 700 education workers at the Peterborough Victoria Northumberland and Clarington Catholic District School Board, is raising serious concerns over staffing cuts set to take effect in the new school year.
The union says the board plans to eliminate 23 Educational Assistant (EA) positions, even as classrooms remain critically understaffed and student needs continue to grow.
CUPE 1453 president Nora Shaughnessy says the ongoing shortage is already pushing workers to the limit, leading to burnout and increased mental and physical health concerns. Many EAs are reportedly working through breaks and lunches to meet student needs, and a recent CUPE survey found more than 96 percent of local education workers report experiencing violent or disruptive incidents on the job, with half saying it happens every day.
The effects on students are also dire. The union says learners who rely on one-on-one or specialized support are being left behind, and violent incidents have led to classroom evacuations, putting students and staff at risk.
Adding to concerns, rising enrolment has resulted in new classrooms being added without corresponding increases in custodial staffing. CUPE says this leaves many spaces improperly cleaned or disinfected.
Shaughnessy says the board has ignored repeated warnings and calls on PVNC Catholic trustees to immediately address the staffing crisis and the escalating violence in schools.
