Investigators are calling on the public to help solve a 17-year-old homicide – and have announced a $50,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction of the person or individuals responsible for the murder of Calvin Vanness.
“It has been over 17 years since the disappearance of Calvin Vanness,” said OPP, in their recent public appeal for help with their homicide investigation. “Investigators remain confident that someone has the key piece of information that will help determine what happened to him and who was responsible.”
According to police, it was Wednesday, March 26, 2008, when Vanness, age 65 at the time, was last seen driving his car – a grey, four-door 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix with red flames on the side – in the Belleville area.
Not even a week later – on Tuesday, April 1, 2008 – police reported that his vehicle was found at a commuter parking lot on Hwy. 38 in Kingston.
“Investigators believe an unknown person may have been operating his vehicle during some of this time,” explained police.
Since April 2010, OPP and the Belleville Police Service have been investigating Vanness’ disappearance as a homicide under the direction of OPP’s criminal investigation branch.
Investigators are now once again calling on the public for help, believing someone has information that could help determine what happened. What’s more, the province is offering a $50,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the individual(s) responsible for his murder, said police, in their latest update.
Anyone with information relating to this investigation is being urged to contact OPP at 1-888-310-1122.
Police are also reminding citizens that should they wish to remain anonymous, Crime Stoppers is an option by calling 1-800-222-8477 or visiting ontariocrimestoppers.ca. Tipsters through Crime Stoppers do not have to testify in court and may be eligible for a cash reward up to $2,000.
