The Rotary Club of Cobourg is calling on the community to help make a global impact through its upcoming event, “Sew Girls Can Go to School.”
Scheduled for Saturday, January 11, 2025, at the Salvation Army on Ballantine Street in Cobourg, the event will involve volunteers creating reusable feminine hygiene kits for girls in Consuelo, Dominican Republic.
Rotarian Richard Brulotte is helping to coordinate the Cobourg event in response to Sunrise Rotary in Whitby’s ask for assistance from other Rotary Clubs.
In rural areas like Consuelo, many young girls stop attending school due to a lack of access to feminine hygiene products. Cobourg Rotary, with support from the Whitby Sunrise Rotary Club, aims to tackle this issue by providing practical solutions that help girls stay in school and complete their education.
Brulotte says this is the second event they’ve hosted.
Volunteers can participate in three shifts-9 a.m. to 12 p.m., 12 p.m. to 3 p.m., or 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Brulotte tells us these simple hygiene kits often make the difference that keeps these girls in school.
Volunteers are needed for sewing, assembling components, and performing quality checks. No sewing experience is required, but participants are encouraged to bring their own sewing machines if possible.
“This event is about turning words into action,” said Brulotte. “It’s a powerful way to say girls deserve the same opportunities as boys.”
