Ontario is expanding its electric vehicle (EV) charging network with 17 new stations set for Northumberland and Clarington.
Announced as part of the $63 million EV ChargeON Program, the initiative focuses on increasing access to EV chargers in smaller and rural communities, ensuring greater connectivity across the province.
“These chargers will make EV driving more convenient for families and workers in our region,” said Northumberland-Peterborough South MPP David Piccini. “Ontario is committed to supporting rural areas where long-distance travel requires reliable infrastructure.”
Key sites include Cobourg’s Albert Street Public Parking Lot, Campbellford Chrysler in Trent Hills, and the Diane Hamre Recreation Complex in Newcastle. Each site will feature Level 2 or Level 3 chargers, accommodating diverse vehicle needs.
Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria emphasized that expanding EV infrastructure is critical to increasing confidence in EV adoption while reducing emissions.
In addition to the new chargers, Ontario has launched an Ultra-Low Overnight Electricity Price Plan, saving EV owners up to $90 annually, and is exploring further discounts for EV charging rates.
The investment aligns with Ontario’s push to strengthen its growing EV manufacturing sector while ensuring rural communities are not left behind.
