A Courtice resident is facing a slew of charges after allegedly fleeing from police in a stolen vehicle, say Northumberland OPP.
On Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2024, at about 3:35 a.m., police said they were on patrol on Wesleyville Road in the Municipality of Port Hope when they observed a passenger vehicle towing a trailer with no light.
“The officer attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver fled southbound,” reported OPP.
Police patrolled the local areas and located the vehicle, which had allegedly collided with an overpass in the Lakeshore Road and Baulch Road area. The driver was then observed fleeing into nearby private fields, said police, noting no other people were involved.
Following an investigation and identification of the vehicle, officers said they learned the vehicle was recently stolen from Whitby.
“The individual was not located during the initial search of the area,” explained police, adding the Port Hope police and Durham police services were also informed of the incident at this time.
In the early hours of Thursday, Nov. 7, Port Hope police contacted OPP saying the person sought in connection with the alleged incident had been taken into custody.
As a result of the investigation, police said the 29-year-old Courtice resident was charged with: Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, flight from peace officer, dangerous operation, failure to stop after accident, fail to report damage to fence bordering highway, drive motor vehicle – perform stunt, draw trailer – no plate, no red light on rear of trailer, and enter premises when entry prohibited.
None of these charges have been proven in court.
The individual was held for bail to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg, reported OPP.
