The Municipality of Port Hope is reminding the community that the fish sanctuary along the Ganaraska River, which runs from the Jocelyn Street Bridge to the CNR Bridge, remains in effect until October 14.
This sanctuary, established by the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR), is designed to protect fish during their peak migration to spawning grounds, including species like Chinook and Coho Salmon. The sanctuary period prevents fishing during this sensitive time when fish are most vulnerable.
Starting October 15, the MNR has extended the fishing season until December 31, allowing anglers to fish along the same stretch of the river. While the density of fish will be significantly lower than during the migration, anglers will still have opportunities to catch various species, such as Rainbow Trout and Brown Trout.
The Municipality encourages residents and visitors to respect the river by following the fishing regulations and disposing of fish waste properly.
Volunteers are encouraged to join the “Respect the River” program, which focuses on preserving this valuable natural resource.
