The Town of Cobourg has announced that the long-awaited reconstruction of its waterfront boardwalk will begin on September 3, 2024.
Spanning from Ontario Street to Hibernia Street, the boardwalk has been a popular feature for residents and visitors alike but has reached the end of its 15-year service life. In 2023, Cobourg town council approved the replacement of the boardwalk following extensive community consultations, including surveys and public meetings.
The new boardwalk will be built using pressure-treated wood for the decking and recycled plastic materials for the substructure, ensuring durability and environmental responsibility. Additionally, the pathway will be widened to 4 metres to comply with the Town’s Accessibility Advisory Committee’s recommendations.
Construction, led by Town staff, will involve the closure of the existing boardwalk, removal of old materials, and installation of the new structure in sections. The project is expected to continue through the spring of 2025, with safety fencing and signage in place during this period. The Town has also taken steps to protect native vegetation in the area, ensuring minimal environmental impact.
Residents will be notified once the boardwalk is reopened for public use and those with questions are asked to contact the Town of Cobourg Public Works Division at 905-372-9971.
