Come, my pretties– to a night you won’t forget. The Port Hope Vintage Film Festival is gearing up for another great festival to celebrate 30 years in Port Hope.
Thirteen incredible movies will be played over the span of three nights.
Rick Miller, the President and Chair of the Marie Dressler Foundation, the charity that runs the festival, says they’ve got big things coming this year.
With the theme locked-on movies based on literature, the team deviates slightly with the incorporation of 1939’s The Wizard of Oz as the feature film of the festival. Miller says there’s a couple of good reasons for that.
The Dressler Foundation wants to go above and beyond this year to commemorate a “stars aligning” scenario for the Film Festival and its host. Miller gives us the details on the parade they’ll be throwing.
The aptly-named, “We’re Off to See The Wizard” costume parade wants to get locals engaged with the big event in a special kind of way. Miller tells us that they want the public to join in the fun after they get the chance to make their own props and costumes at two puppet and mask-making workshops two weeks before the event.
The costume parade begins at 6 p.m. on October 20 with the workshops leading up to it on September 23 and October 7.
With all of this being said, it’s easy to see that during the Fall months, Port Hope will be at no shortage of great attractions as they expect festival-goers from as far as the GTA. With culture-defining, multi-million dollar films playing such a domineering role in entertainment today, we asked Miller what’s so special about coming back to the roots of it all– Here’s what he had to say.
Follow the yellow brick road down to Capitol Theatre on Friday, October 20 for the showing of The Wizard of Oz at 7:30 p.m. Watch for falling houses.
