With the municipal election coming up in nearly two months, we decided to take a look at how Northumberland County Council could potentially fair once all the ballots are cast.
Northumberland County CAO Jennifer Moore said there are currently councillors who are not running in the upcoming election, Mayor Bob Sanderson of Port Hope, Mayor Gail Latchford of Alnwick/Haldimand, and Mayor Bill Cane, Hamilton Township.
In Hamilton Township, former Deputy Mayor Scott Jibb was the sole candidate to file, which means he was appointed as the new mayor. That means there are two municipalities that will have elections to decide their new mayor, Port Hope and Alnwick/Haldimand.
Mayor Mandy Martin of Cramahe Township was acclaimed as the only candidate in her municipality.
That means current County Councillors Mayor John Henderson of Cobourg, Mayor Brian Ostrander of Brighton, and Mayor Bob Crate of Trent Hills are all running for the seat.
As things currently stand, that means at minimum nearly half the county council will be fresh faces.
Moore elaborated on the potential outcome for the County.
Moore explained how the Warden is selected.
Moore said voters should be considering some of the county level services when casting their vote for mayor.
County Council is comprised of the elected mayors of each of the seven municipalities in Northumberland.
