This summer’s high heat heightens the risk of contracting West Nile Virus.
The types of mosquitos that thrive in this weather can acquire the disease increasing the chance of human exposure to infection.
Self defense is your best protection against mosquito bites. Experts say when venturing into areas where mosquitos are plentiful, cover up as much as possible. Wear light coloured clothing which is less attractive to mosquitos and correctly apply an approved insect repellent.
Since the start of trapping this year, public health staff have collected more than 6,000 mosquitoes for testing. So far not one mosquito has tested positive for West Nile.
The last confirmed human cases of the virus in Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District and Hastings Prince Edward were in 2020.
