The Children’s Summer Reading Club Starts in Brighton on June 24th
The TD Summer Reading Club began in 1996 and is Canada’s largest summer reading program, with children participating from coast to coast. This year, the Brighton Public Library along with 2,000 other public libraries in Canada will be operating this club, to keep area children reading through the summer, starting on June 24th.
The Brighton Public Library has many engaging programs and free activities all summer long for all age groups but the Summer Reading Club is open to children ages 0-12, with two options for participation. For older children, they can either, choose to participate strictly online or they can participate in-person and keep track on their activities on paper.
“Our registration kits will be available at the branch starting on June 24th.”said Penny Kingyens – Children’s Librarian at the Brighton Public Library.
The in-person kits include recommended reads, logs to keep track of their progress, craft ideas, goodies, etc. Also for participants who are participating in person, each week the branch will have interactive games, opportunities for children to share what they are working on along with some special guests who will drop in to meet the readers.
There will also be a draw at end of summer, one lucky child with win a prize.
For older children choosing to do the challenge online there are lots of e-books to read, jokes, interactive stories, and a chance to do online book reviews. Either format is designed to encourage children to keep reading and learning throughout the summer months.
Although the kits do have recommended reading lists, and they have the books at the library available to sign out, Penny encourages participants to read what they love, any genre or any topic of interest qualifies under the reading challenge.
“We want to encourage reading and of course, we have many people at the library that can assist your child to find books that they will enjoy reading based on their individual interests,” added Penny. “We will also have some summer story walks that will give the children a chance to interact with books outdoors, for some family fun time too. “
