A sexual assault and sexual exploitation trial that spanned more than two years from investigation to case proceedings, has ended. The accused, 49 year old Antonio Sarmiento, has been found not guilty.
Before the verdict the crown had already withdrawn several of the charges.
A published report says the case judge noted he had concerns about the reliability of evidence presented by both the crown and defense. Earlier this week it was reported the judge told the court that based on the evidence, he was left with reasonable doubt the accused was guilty of any of the charges against him.
Sarmiento had pleaded not guilty to all of the charges against him in connection with a police investigation in Port Hope that started in September of 2019.
