If you have been downtown Port Hope or Cobourg you have probably noticed large swarms of midges.
Midges arrive and swarm along the shores of Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River.
The small insects, also known as lake flies, are common in the Great Lakes.
The insects don’t stay for long and have the ability to survive freezing temperatures because they create their own natural antifreeze protein also known as AFPs.
Scientist say that there are over 1300 species of midges and that they have been studying them for decades.
